Mission Statement: The Association for Energy Affordability, Inc. (AEA) is a not-for-profit education, training and energy services organization with the mission to promote energy affordability through energy efficiency. AEA collaborates with various organizations and networks, including Weatherization Assistance Providers, utilities, and government agencies, to improve energy efficiency for New Yorkers residing in low- and moderate-income multifamily buildings and small homes.

Position Summary: AEA seeks to add an Energy Efficiency Engineer to its growing New Construction &Tech Services teams, which provides energy and sustainability consulting to affordable housing owners developers in the New York City metropolitan area and beyond for both new and existing buildings. The Energy Efficiency Engineer assists in providing building owners and developers with expertise that promotes high energy performance with a vision toward green or sustainable building design. Responsibilities: Under supervision, the Energy Efficiency Engineer is responsible for energy analysis, modeling, commissioning, retro commissioning, and program and project management of residential construction projects. The Energy Efficiency Engineer collaborates with a variety of internal and external parties toward developing and implementing energy efficient and sustainable projects. She or he evaluates multifamily building designs and makes design recommendations to reduce energy consumption, minimize negative environmental impact, and promote healthy living.

Responsibilities include the following, and are subject to change as needed:

  • Engage in a collaborative process with development teams comprised of building developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors in order to communicate and promote the benefits of high-performance, energy-efficient and sustainable design.
  • Work with project development teams to establish energy efficiency and sustainability goals for the project and ensure compliance with targeted programs, building codes and performance standards and local laws including requirements of NYSERDA, Weatherization, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED, Passive House, ASHRAE, NYCECC, NYC LL84 & LL87, etc.
  • Collaborate with development teams in preparing and submitting documentation to regulatory agencies or certifying bodies such as NYSERDA, Enterprise, USGBC and Passive House Institute. Serve as liaison to certifying bodies throughout project design and construction and develop all required program documentation.
  • Review construction documents (including architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and spec) and provide building analysis to ensure and enhance compliance with program requirements. Make recommendations for energy efficiency improvements and maximum sustainability.
  • Create pre and post construction energy models in conformance with program guidelines, utilizing building simulation software.
  • Act as sustainability project manager from schematic phase through construction, reviewing submittals and related project documents to maintain project goals and program compliance.
  • Visit construction sites independently or with other AEA members and/or outside agents to engage in project monitoring, functional performance testing and verification, including technical assessments. Develop site reports to provide ongoing status and guidance on program compliance.
  • Develop functional testing plans to best verify operational sequences and operational parameters to determine how efficiently building equipment is operating.
  • Develop facility energy conservation measures and efficiency improvements relating to energy auditing, retro commissioning and commissioning.
  • Recommend improvements to utility procurement and operations. Review operating modes, sequence of operations, and specifics of equipment, operations, and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues that affect system operation and energy efficiency.
  • Assist in developing heating system design.
  • Keep abreast of Energy Codes, Standards, and new technologies.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • B.A. or B.S. with a major in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong computer software, analytical, and computational skills.
  • Good English language verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical information to audiences of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to produce technically correct finished work, including technical reports, white papers, metrics, specifications and briefs.
  • Demonstrated interest in the principles of energy conservation and high performance, and sustainable building design.
  • Technical knowledge of energy efficiency standards, commissioning and retro commissioning, green building standards and building science.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to maintain attention to detail and exercise good independent judgment.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple projects and priorities within a team-oriented office environment.
  • Prior knowledge of energy modeling software (e.g.: DOE-2, eQUEST, TREAT, or EA-Quip).
  • Familiarity with requirements of ASHRAE, NYCECC, NYC LL 84 & LL87, Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, and/or Energy Star a plus.
  • Accreditation or Certification as a CEM, MFBA, CBCP, EBCP, CCP, CPMP, Passive House and/or LEED Professional a plus.
  • Strong HVAC and/or controls background.
  • Strong functional testing background. Knowledge and capabilities to perform investigation of boiler systems, HVAC equipment and EMCS/DDC systems to recommend and implement advanced control strategies.
  • Knowledge of utility information systems, energy management systems.

Physical Requirements:

An essential portion of the responsibilities and time of the Energy Efficiency Engineer will be performing field-based oversight, testing and verification. The occupant of this position must be able to bend, lift and carry up to 40 lbs. with other AEA team members in order to transport, set up and operate building testing and verification equipment; ascend and descend stairs and ladders in order to travel from floor to floor; stand, walk and move about for various periods of time; handle exposures to summer and winter temperatures; traverse rough surfaces, both inside and outside building properties; tolerate exposure to dust and/or fumes in order to conduct building inspections (protective equipment will be provided).
