I moved to Maine in 1975. I started a business in renewable energy systems, initially wind generators. The first building I put up was a 32' by 64' barn with trusses that could lift 2 ton wind mills and 16 large skylights for day lighting. I then constructed three solar powered residences over the next 10 years. In 2004 we moved to Northfield, Massachusetts, to be near our only son who went to the Northfield/Mount Hermon School. Having spent time in southern Maine since I was born in 1948, I decided I needed to build another home in Kennebunkport so we could be able to come back an spend time with long known friends. The home had to be small with a minimum impact and had to be a positive energy structure.

Envelope and Mechanicals

Subslab assembly

House sits on a 3" tall foundation wall. The foundation footings are mostly ledge. The floor is crushed stone covered with a vapor barrier.

Foundation wall assembly

Foundation wall is 8" thick poured concrete. A total of 69 yards. It is fully covered with 4" of EPS foam.

Above grade wall assembly

The walls consist of double 2x4 walls covered on the s\exterior by zip system sheathing. The 12" thick wall cavity is filled with dense packed National fiber cellulose at a density of 4 lb/ft3.
