CSE is seeking a Technical Specialist with experience in commercial, institutional and industrial energy efficiency to assist with technical aspects of program design and delivery. The successful applicant will conduct engineering reviews of custom and prescriptive project applications, liaise with clients and engineering firms, mentor junior staff on technical matters, conduct energy audits, develop measurement and verification plans.

Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is an independent, mission-driven nonprofit organization with offices in San Diego, Oakland, Los Angeles and Boston. We accelerate the adoption of clean and efficient energy solutions via program administration, technical assistance, policy innovation, and other forms of market facilitation. We are uniquely positioned and engaged with a variety of stakeholders and market actors, including policy-makers, state and federal agencies, regional and local governments, utilities, business and civic leaders, and individuals in both the general market and equity sectors. Our technical areas of focus include distributed energy resources (renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage, fuel cells, combined heat and power) and clean transportation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical reviews of commercial, institutional and industrial energy efficiency project applications. Peer review of others’ work

  • Liaise with clients for successful and efficient project execution

  • Subject matter expertise in energy efficient equipment and processes

  • Site visits to client locations to assess existing facility or equipment conditions

  • Engineering calculations for energy consuming equipment and program cost-effectiveness

  • Provide training, technical assistance and guidance on energy efficient technologies, including emerging technologies and practices to companies participating in utility-sponsored programs

  • Provide ongoing utility client support as needed. Support will include program reporting, meeting attendance and other client communication as needed

  • Conduct energy audits of commercial buildings

  • Develop a variety of measurement and verification (M&V) plans

  • Utilize analytical tools and M&V methodologies to evaluate the performance of, and make recommendations for, energy systems and equipment

  • Assist regional management in preparation of project scopes and hour estimates in support of business development opportunities

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10 years energy efficiency experience

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering

  • Eligible for a MA Professional Engineer (PE) designation 

  • Proficiency in engineering design or simulation software (e.g. eQuest, Energy Plus, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time around Northeast region (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York)

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of combined heat and power, pumping, heating and cooling, fans, building envelopes, heat recovery, lighting, controls

  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and energy consumption

  • Experience with measurement and verification

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and/or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP)

  • Strong planning, organization and supervisory skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English

  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail

  • Committed team player with a desire to produce excellent work

  • A desire to mentor staff

  • Placing high priority on timeliness of deliverables

  • Time management skills to handle multiple priorities; flexibility to work overtime as needed

  • High proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access)

  • Experience evaluating alternative generation technologies (e.g. solar PV, geothermal)

  • Knowledge of emerging efficiency or generation technologies (e.g. energy storage)
