Electrical Project Engineer

Company:

Petersen Engineering

Location:

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Driven by a unique workplace culture and a passion for sustainability, Petersen Engineering, Inc. (PEI) is a rapidly growing MEP/FP firm whose mission is Smart, Sustainable Design. We take pride in being recognized throughout the industry for our friendly and professional service and have carefully cultivated our team and culture to position our firm for success. Our firm is growing to meet the expanding needs of the high-performance building sector. And we are committed to making PEI the best place you have ever worked.

PEI has doubled in size over the past two years. In 2019 we added in-house electrical engineering capability to better serve our clients with more seamless service. Having full MEP/FP services in-house has enhanced our appeal to existing and new clients, and as a result, the volume of work that we turn down has increased steadily in recent years. We have particularly strong relationships in the affordable housing market with several key private developers. In the past three years we have increased our workload in assisted living, with 10+ projects currently completed, in construction, or in design. During the same timeframe we have steadily increased the number of Passive House certified projects we are working on. Other sectors where we have a long history of experience include health care, campus, wastewater and water treatment. We are working to increase our repeat client base and broaden project types in order to sustain growth and build resiliency. Our firm now includes five Certified Passive House Consultants (CPHCs), a testament to our progressive, whole-systems approach to our work. We believe that this progressive approach, our success in a large market (Boston), and our professionalism provide a solid basis for being optimistic about our vision for continued growth.

Role Overview

As Project Engineer, you will support the engineering, design, drafting, production, and execution of project work. With support from Project Managers and Senior Engineers, you will independently lead and manage project engineering and production from the schematic design (SD) phase through the design development (DD), Construction Document (CD) and Construction Administration phases. You will also delegate project tasks to designers and junior staff, and mentor them to expand their capacity.

We anticipate that your role and skill set will grow as we continue to grow. We are excited about providing you with the coaching, mentoring and professional development support you need to advance within our team – potentially becoming a Project Manager, a Senior Engineer, and/or a member of our leadership team, depending on your appetite for continuing education.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • EIT and/or PE track strongly preferred
  • Ability to adapt to changing project demands and prioritize workload to meet multiple, sometimes conflicting deadlines
  • Ability to mentor and coach more junior staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of NFPA, Building, and Energy codes
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, both internally and externally
  • Willingness to “do what it takes” to get the job done
  • A passion for PEI’s mission

Compensation and Benefits

Our salaries and Paid Time Off are competitive with those offered by other sustainability-focused MEP/FP firms in the Northeast. In addition, we have historically provided bonuses as the firm’s financial performance has allowed. We also offer health, dental and vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and a company 401k with a match of up to 4% based on your contribution of 5% of your salary.
