HELM is seeking a full-time construction business consultant and coach to join our growing team and expand our impact. Our ideal candidate is an exceptional communicator, passionate about supporting business owners and worker-owned cooperatives. You must be a strategic thinker, have experience in construction or a related industry, and like us, want to change the world. You are skilled at thinking big-picture, able to support a company to develop their vision, and can also get down into the weeds to troubleshoot day-to-day challenges. We are looking for someone who has been in a management role and loves mentoring, coaching, and training. You must be comfortable with technology, a virtual workplace, and can work independently. The position could be based out of our offices in Montpelier or Brattleboro, Vermont or done remotely with some travel required. Job Description:

The Construction Business Consultant and Coach is responsible for working directly with construction and design firms to develop their business systems. Tasks include in-person and virtual meetings to generate annual work-plans for business development tasks. The Consultant provides training on estimating, project management, and job cost accounting. They support companies with human resources and personnel challenges, work on sales and marketing strategies, and provide high-level expertise to business owners looking to improve their operations, effectiveness, and profitability. The Consultant helps companies to develop the triple bottom line aspects of their business, with a focus on People, Planet, and Profit.

Key Attributes:

  • Experience working in the construction industry, in a leadership or management position.

  • Empathy and interpersonal sensitivity; great listening skills.

  • Clear communication style with an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, and an ability to work independently. 

  • Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development.

  • Experience in financial analysis in the context of small businesses.

  • Ability to analytically break down problems into their core issues and draw conclusions for appropriate resolutions.

  • Qualification to coach and train clients on sales, estimating, and project management systems.

  • Aptitude with technology including QuickBooks, estimating software, scheduling software, and video and phone communications.

  • Strong writing and public speaking skills. 

  • Passion for being part of a progressive mission-driven company that is committed to social justice and working to be anti-racist and feminist, by advocating for and protecting the rights of people of color, women, transgender and gender-nonconforming people.

  • Commitment to climate justice by examining issues such as equality, human rights, collective rights, and the historical responsibilities for climate change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop meeting agendas.

  • Facilitate one-on-one and group meetings.

  • Manage the completion of tasks defined in a company’s work plan.

  • Lead initial consult meetings and small group training sessions.

  • Review documents for clients, including but not limited to proposals, estimates, contracts, job descriptions, marketing materials; and provide editing and writing support.

  • Develop operating budgets with companies and review and analyze regular financial reports.

  • Create guiding documents explaining processes, either tailored to specific companies or for general use on our blog or training handouts.

  • Conduct regular coaching calls or “check-ins” with business owners and key staff.
