BuildingEnergy Boston 2023 was one of our most successful conferences yet, and we hope you will consider participating in shaping our 2024 conference by attending the Open Planning Meeting.

BuildingEnergy Boston is designed by and for practitioners (like you) in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. We rely on NESEA community feedback and participation to ensure that our sessions reflect the most important and relevant topics for conference attendees.

The meeting will be interactive and paced to allow thoughtful conversation with other professionals from around the Northeast. You will also learn how you can become a member of the Content Committee, which reviews session proposals and guides their development into high-quality conference sessions. This event is free and open to all — NESEA Membership is not required to attend.

Join NESEA as we tour Solara Phase 3, a low embodied carbon, market-rate, net zero multifamily complex in Rotterdam, NY. The complex, including the first two phases, will be the largest market-rate net zero complex in the US upon completion.

This tour will reveal how ambitious energy and carbon goals can be achieved side-by-side with good space design in a way that is simple to execute. Attendees will hear from multiple members of the project team, including our host, Black Mountain Architecture, and will have a chance to connect with each of the speakers in small group settings as we make our way through the project.

This project was recognized as Round One & Two Winner in NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence Competition, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The Buildings of Excellence Competition was initially launched in March 2019 and has awarded over $48 million to 56 exemplary clean and resilient multifamily projects through three rounds.

Each year, the NESEA Membership elects individuals to serve on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate, you can complete the application here (you must log in to view the form). Current members of the board’s Nominating Committee will review and vet applications to develop a slate of candidates for the ballot. The NESEA Membership will be invited to cast their votes this fall, and the new board term will start on January 1, 2024. You can review the NESEA Board of Directors Job Description here.

We recently held the first of two Content Committee meetings for BuildingEnergy NYC 2023, which will take place on October 12 in New York City. Conference session proposals from the NESEA community were reviewed and vetted by a volunteer committee of NESEA Members. Some very exciting ideas have been submitted and the discussion was lively and thought-provoking.

In early May NESEA took a sold out crowd on a Pro Tour of a 7,744 square foot two story wood frame office building, serving as the headquarters of the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire. Chapman Construction / Design hosted this event and provided some fascinating insights into the building process. We would like to also thank our sponsors and the NESEA community for attending. On May 19th, NESEA, along with our hosts from Zero Energy Design, took attendees on a Pro Tour of a Triple Decker Retrofit Providing Affordable Housing in Cambridge, MA. The event was sold out and we would like to extend our thanks to our hosts, attendees and sponsors for making a great day of learning and connecting possible. Join us for an open house and roundtable event to explore the economic and ecological opportunities in farming, processing, advanced manufacturing and designing with hemp as a building material.

Hemp offers enormous potential as a building material. It sequesters high amounts of carbon when growing, and requires limited water, fertilizer and pesticides. When used as a building material together with lime and water, it creates non-toxic, breathable, non-flammable walls.

The event will begin with an Open House of two recently completed homes at Wally Farms, where hemplime was used as its primary wall material, followed by a Roundtable to discuss the opportunities and bottlenecks to locally grown, manufactured and installed hemp lime construction. Learn more...

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has partnered with Built Environment Plus (BE+) to run this exciting new challenge to influence design decisions to address the embodied carbon of projects. Along with cash prizes for projects demonstrating significant embodied carbon reductions, the Challenge is providing resources, tools, and trainings to support project teams in performing Whole Building Life Cycle Assessments (WBLCAs). Free licenses to either One Click LCA or Tally LCA are being provided to every firm that simply expresses interest in the Challenge.

The deadline for submitting projects is March 31, 2024. A total of $380,000 in prizes are available. Five prizes are reserved for first-time use of WBLCAs. Projects must be whole buildings over 20,000 square feet. Prizes include a $50,000 grand prize for substantial rehabilitation, a $50,000 grand prize for new construction, nine runner-up prizes of $30,000, and a $10,000 people’s choice award. Learn more...
