Thank You for Making BuildingEnergy Boston a Success!
Thank you to everyone who attended BuildingEnergy Boston. It was a real joy to see our community come together to share ideas and connect, especially around a subject as vitally important as climate resilience. Our thanks go out to our sponsors, speakers, exhibitors and Content Committee for their support, especially to Conference Chairs Mark Schow and Karno Widjaja, and Vice-Chair Keirstan Field.

We have compiled a collection of photos from the conference here and you can review slide decks from conference sessions on our website here.

Our community is truly what makes our events special. We hope to see you at an upcoming NESEA event soon!

Upcoming Events

We are still working to set the 2024 series and will announce the full lineup of events when it is finalized.

Pro Tour: All-Electric, Affordable Passive House Development in Boston

Event Date: Friday, April 26, 2024
Time: 1pm-5pm
Location: Roxbury, MA 02120
CEU Information: AIA pending
Cost: $25 Members/$35 Non-Members

Join NESEA for the first Pro Tour of 2024, a new construction passive house project that will bring 50 units of affordable senior housing to the community of Roxbury, Massachusetts.

On April 26, the team behind this five-story, passive house development will open the doors to the NESEA community for a behind-the-scenes look at this project. Attendees will learn about the building’s history, design and construction, and systems, and how it fits into the master plan to transform a former MBTA bus yard into a thriving mixed-use, mixed-income community.

This fully-electric building features the first permitted Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for emergency power over 4-stories in the City of Boston. A significant factor in deciding this design was to consolidate the equipment to make as much space as possible for the rooftop solar, allowing a 90 kw array tied to the first-of-its-kind BESS for demand offset and emergency power. Additional electric features include: air source heat pump hot water heaters decentralized per floor, all electric kitchens, and electric washing machines and heat pump dryers.

We hope you'll join us!

Submit a Session Proposal for BuildingEnergy NYC

BuildingEnergy NYC will take place on October 24, 2024, with the theme of Beyond Compliance. Session proposals are due on April 28, and will be reviewed by an experienced committee of NESEA Members. We hope you'll consider submitting an idea!

Beyond Compliance: Risks and Rewards

The urgency of climate change demands bold action, innovation, and transformative leadership. In recent years, New York and the Northeast have led the country through groundbreaking changes to building codes, energy codes, and financial incentives to support climate adaptation across all sectors. Today, we have an opportunity to push our industry to achieve and even exceed these ambitious mandates. The 2024 BuildingEnergy NYC conference will be a chance to explore both the risks and rewards of moving Beyond Compliance.

At this year’s conference, we challenge you to share your experiences, successes, and setbacks with projects and programs that exceed the bare minimum and innovate on existing practices. We need to be thinking beyond compliance both in terms of scope (What else?) and time (What next?). This holistic approach encompasses the intersections of health, efficiency, resilience, and financial benefits, and prioritizes the needs of people while addressing the climate crisis.

Within the umbrella of our conference theme, we are specifically interested in proposals addressing:

  • Compliance Deadlines: Meeting LL97 and other regulatory mandates
  • Funding Sources and Financing: Exploring new and existing sources to foster sustainability initiatives and high-performance projects
  • Program Synergy: Integrating initiatives such as electrification and weatherization for enhanced impact and return on investment (ROI)
  • Technology & Reporting: Incorporating ESG and AI advancements, as well as other new technology
  • Risk Reduction & Scalability: Mitigating risk across systems, operations, and finances at scale
  • Workforce Training & Development: Cultivating a skilled and diverse workforce
  • Equity, Health, Comfort, and Resilience: Emphasizing occupant well-being and risk reduction

Questions? Speaker suggestions? Want to talk over a proposal idea before submitting? Contact Ben Sachs-Hamilton, Conference Director, at bsachs-hamilton@nesea.org.
