Join NESEA for the first Pro Tour of 2024, a new construction passive house project that will bring 50 units of affordable senior housing to the community of Roxbury, Massachusetts.
On April 26, the team behind this five-story, passive house development will open the doors to the NESEA community for a behind-the-scenes look at this project. Attendees will learn about the building’s history, design and construction, and systems, and how it fits into the master plan to transform a former MBTA bus yard into a thriving mixed-use, mixed-income community.
This fully-electric building features the first permitted Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for emergency power over 4-stories in the City of Boston. A significant factor in deciding this design was to consolidate the equipment to make as much space as possible for the rooftop solar, allowing a 90 kw array tied to the first-of-its-kind BESS for demand offset and emergency power. Additional electric features include: air source heat pump hot water heaters decentralized per floor, all electric kitchens, and electric washing machines and heat pump dryers.
In addition to a mix of 1- and 2-bedroom units, the project will include a 1,200 square foot community art gallery space on the ground floor, shared meeting space, a cafe, a resident garden, a private terrace, and a public plaza.
The design team aimed to push stereotypes of affordable housing and 55+ living with fresh, engaging design, both inside and out. The project will provide a high-quality, accessible option for neighborhood residents to age in place in their own community while also leaving a light carbon footprint in an environmental justice community.
Our day will start with lunch, courtesy of our Title Sponsor, Revision Energy. Event attendees will hear a project history and overview before breaking into small groups with various members of the project team for the tour of the building. Each small group will hear from each project team member as we move through the project. The event will wrap up with full-group Q&A and a networking reception with light refreshments.
