Getting Started with NESEA
A Community of Practice
The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) advances sustainability practices in the built environment by cultivating a cross-disciplinary community where practitioners are encouraged to share, collaborate, and learn. Together, we are working towards our vision of a vibrant and resilient built environment that supports climate justice and equity.
Our community is made up of people from many professional backgrounds who all have a stake in this work: builders, architects and designers, engineers, vendors, developers, renewable energy experts, other nonprofits, students, consultants, and others who come together in service of our mission and vision.
Founded in 1975 and based in Greenfield, Massachusetts, we are the region's leading 501(c)(3) membership organization promoting sustainable energy practices in the built environment. You do not need to be a dues-paying member to participate in most NESEA programming. Our membership is made up of many individuals and organizations (including businesses, nonprofits, and academic institutions) who pay annual dues to support our work and gain access to a suite of member benefits.
Our work is vital to increasing sustainability, especially in the building sector. In the United States, the building sector accounts for nearly half of all energy consumption. It also produces nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest single contributor to climate change. To shape the built environment is to shape the future not only of our cities and towns, but also of our planet.
