Each year, the NESEA Membership elects individuals to serve on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate, you can complete the application here (you must log in to view the form). Current members of the board’s Nominating Committee will review and vet applications to develop a slate of candidates for the ballot. The NESEA Membership will be invited to cast their votes this fall, and the new Board term will start on January 1, 2023.

The Schiller Coastal Studies Center is a scientific village that creates a new home for Bowdoin’s Marine Science program and visibly expresses the College’s commitment to sustainability. Situated on Orr’s Island,approximately 12 miles from Bowdoin’s main campus, the Center serves as a facility for retreats, dialogue, and collaboration among local and national leaders working to address critical issues of coastal and climate concern. In keeping with the small scale of a Maine camp, the new facilities are compact and sensitively sited within the island’s wooded landscape. On August 5, NESEA will be running an in-depth tour of this campus, giving attendees the chance to learn from the interdisciplinary team that made the project possible.

NESEA's BuildingEnergy NYC conference is designed by and for practitioners in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and building/energy policy. Conference sessions and showcase demos offer best practices and lessons learned, case studies and proven data, technical "how-to"s, emerging technologies, and innovative policies and programs.

In partnership with The Compliance Mentor Group, NESEA has been awarded a grant to run a year-long career exploratory program bringing students from Boston-area voc/tech schools together with professionals in the high performance building industry. The program, titled BEST (Building Energy Scholars Team), will run during the 2022-2023 school year and is being funded by a grant administered through MassCEC.

On July 7th, the BEST program offered students a special Pro Tour of Salem Heights, a 283-unit affordable housing community located in Salem, MA. Participants learned how the interdisciplinary project team worked together to plan and executive this ambitious deep energy retrofit, which will bring the project to passive house standards. It was a great day of learning and we thank our participants and partners for making the tour so successful. 

After eight years, Miriam Aylward, who most recently served as Executive Director, left NESEA to pursue another professional opportunity. Her last day was July 1, 2022. This announcement is certainly bittersweet. The NESEA community is dear to Miriam’s heart, and it is hard to say goodbye and to end a partnership that has been so beneficial for our community. The NESEA Board has voted to appoint Florence MacGregor as Interim Executive Director.

The summer of 2022 Passive House Accelerator magazine issue explores the theme of Outrage + Optimism, a phrase coined by Christiana Figueres, the former UN Climate Chief who ushered the Paris Agreement to completion and who urges us to harness both outrage and optimism to energize and sustain our climate action.

In this issue, Passive House delves into the vital role design will play in the future built environment, particularly by focusing on case studies from a wide range of building typologies in North America and beyond. Read more...
