Pro Tour of an Environmental Center in Collaboration with Voch/Tech School in South Dartmouth

Event Date: Friday, June 21, 2024
Time: 12:30pm-5pm
Location: South Dartmouth, MA 02748
CEU Information: AIA (pending)
Cost: $25 Members/$35 Non-Members

In just over two weeks, join us for a summer Pro Tour of a recently-completed Living Building Challenge project, situated on an 85-acre nature preserve in southeastern Massachusetts.

The new 1500 square-foot building will serve as the welcome center for the Lloyd Center for the Environment, providing conservation, recreation, and environmental education for the community in and around South Dartmouth. The welcome center was built in pursuit of Living Building Challenge (LBC), a stringent certification that will result in a building where all materials have been vetted to be “red-list chemical free,” and net positive for energy, water, and waste.

Something that sets this particular building apart is the story of collaboration between the owners, project team, and the local vocational school: the project was largely completed by students who were applying the trades they were learning in school directly to this real-world project to benefit their community: more than 1200 students have contributed to this project in some way. The Pro Tour will not only feature building details, but will tell the story of this partnership from the perspective of representatives from the school.

We hope you will join us!

BuildingEnergy Boston 2025: Open Planning Meeting

Event Date: Tuesday, June 25, 2024
Time: 3:00pm-4:30pm
Location: online
Cost: free

Share your vision for BuildingEnergy Boston 2025!

BuildingEnergy Boston is designed by and for practitioners (like you) in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. Next year's conference will be held in March 2025, and you have an opportunity to share your vision and help to shape the event by attending an Open Planning Meeting on June 25.

At this year's virtual meeting, we will be asking questions such as:

  • What new skills, knowledge, and solutions are most needed in the field today?
  • How can we step up our game to meet new challenges and opportunities?
  • What session topics and speakers would create an extraordinary learning experience at the BuildingEnergy conference?

The meeting will be interactive and paced to allow thoughtful conversation with other professionals from around the Northeast. You will also learn how you can become a member of the Content Committee, which reviews session proposals and guides their development into high-quality conference sessions.

This meeting is free and open to all — NESEA Membership is not required to attend. For more information, contact Ben Sachs-Hamilton, Conference Director, at bsachs-hamilton@nesea.org.

BuildingEnergy Access Spotlight
Meet [RE] Architect

BuildingEnergy Access is a NESEA initiative to support the work of WMBEs (women and minority-owned business enterprises) by connecting them with the resources of the NESEA community. Each month, we'll introduce a participating company to the wider NESEA community through a spotlight interview.

We recently sat down with Ashley Owens and Jamie Schwadel of [RE] Architect, an Ayers, Massachusetts-based design/build firm, to discuss their work, running their business, and their impressions of the BuildingEnergy Access program so far. Read more...

Apply to Serve on the NESEA Board of Directors

Deadline: Friday, July 19, 2024

Each year, the NESEA Membership elects individuals to serve on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate, you can complete the application here (you must log in to view the form). The deadline to apply is July 19.

Current members of the Board’s Nominating Committee will review and vet applications to develop a slate of candidates for the ballot. The NESEA Membership will be invited to cast their votes this fall, and the new Board term will start on January 1, 2025. Prior to applying, we recommend viewing the Board Member job description.

We're looking for people who love NESEA and feel a call to serve its mission and vision. We encourage applications from individuals who identify as women, people of color, or LGBTQ+, and other groups traditionally underrepresented in our industry. We also recognize that serving on a Board of Directors and attending in-person meetings may be prohibitively expensive and have made funds available to support board members for whom participation would be a financial hardship.

Celebrating 10 Years of Bottom Lines: Triple Bottom Lines Impact

We recently hosted a special celebration, commemorating a decade of Bottom Lines, NESEA's peer mentoring and business development program.

At the end of May we spent two days together at the historic Omni Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The inspiring location was the perfect backdrop for reflection on our shared achievements. We had fun and fostered deeper connections, while exploring what’s next for our companies and community. You can see more photos from the event here.
