NESEA's BuildingEnergy NYC conference and trade show is a chance to immerse yourself in a full day of networking and intensive learning with your peers from the fields of design, construction, engineering, policy, finance, and beyond.

The urgency of climate change demands bold action, innovation, and transformative leadership. The 2024 BuildingEnergy NYC conference will be a chance to explore both the risks and rewards of moving Beyond Compliance.

This unique event is designed by and for our community of practitioners, with sessions presenting real case studies and proven data, as well as showcasing innovative technologies and programs. You can browse this year's session lineup here.

Tour a Passive House Rated Historic Renovation in Connecticut

Event Date: Friday, September 6, 2024
Time: 1pm-5pm
Location: New Haven, CT
CEU Information: AIA (4 LU) Phius (4 Credit Hours)
Cost: $25 Members/$35 Non-Members

Join us this Friday for a Pro Tour of a recently renovated historic building in New Haven, CT!

During this event, attendees will learn how the project team transformed this building, originally a hotel from 1816, into a Passive House-certified commercial space while preserving its historic facade and place in the community.

Our tour will begin with an opening presentation from the hosting team at Patriquin Architects, which will give attendees background on the historic significance of the building, the process of renovating it, and the efforts put into reaching the Passive House standard. After the opening presentation, we'll split into groups to hear from the professionals behind the project, who will share their specific work. After the tour, we'll host a reception and Q&A with the team.

Key components of the design include a highly-insulated and airtight envelope, the use of triple-pane high-performance windows on the interior of the existing historic windows, new electric ERV heat pump systems for ventilation, heating, and cooling, and a solar array on the roof.

BuildingEnergy Access Spotlight
Meet CoEverything

BuildingEnergy Access is a NESEA initiative to support the work of WMBEs (women and minority-owned business enterprises) by connecting them with the resources of the NESEA community. Each month, we'll introduce a participating company to the wider NESEA community through a spotlight interview.

We recently sat down with Haley Hardwick-Witman and Declan Keefe of CoEverything, a Boston, MA-based company that works collaboratively with communities, organizations, and entrepreneurs to design and develop more cooperative and sustainable buildings, businesses, and projects.

We discussed their work, running the business, and their impressions of the BuildingEnergy Access program so far. Read more...

Now Recruiting: BIPOC-Owned Massachusetts Companies for BuildingEnergy Access

Applications are now open for the second cohort of BuildingEnergy Access, a new initiative to support the work of women and minority-owned business enterprises by connecting them with the resources of the NESEA community. In this cohort-based program, business owners receive custom business development services, attend industry events for education and networking, receive marketing opportunities through a spotlight program, and participate in a business-owner peer group to hone their triple bottom lines practices (people, planet, and prosperity).

BuildingEnergy Access is an expansion of existing NESEA programs, supplemented with professional services from our program partner, HELM Construction Solutions. This program is designed to serve businesses led by people who have traditionally been underrepresented in the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) space, including people of underrepresented gender and racial identities

Who Should Apply?
Cohort Two will serve companies led by BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) individuals, including Latinx-identifying. Because this program is being funded with a grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, participating companies should be Massachusetts-based, or perform work in Massachusetts with an individual participant residing within the commonwealth. Priority deadline for Cohort 2 is Nov 9. Learn more and apply here.

BuildingEnergy Bottom Lines: Actively Recruiting Paid Facilitators

Bottom Lines is NESEA's peer-network program for business owners and managers in the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) industry. Over its ten year history, this program has supported more than 90 businesses as they worked together to improve their triple Bottom Line: people, prosperity, and planet.

The program breaks the participating companies into groups of 10-12, each with a paid facilitator or pair of co-facilitators. We are actively seeking additional facilitators to support the growth and continued success of the program and its participants.

Facilitators do not need to be subject matter experts but should have experience with leadership, facilitation, meeting planning, and business development/operations. Most significantly, facilitators should have a deep connection to NESEA's overall mission. Priority deadline September 30. Read more about this opportunity here or email bottomlines@nesea.org for additional information.

Building Well Episode 5: The Juiciness of Decarbonizing Domestic Hot Water with Neil Donnelly & Charlie Simek from New Ecology

Join host Alina Michelewicz and co-host Michelle Moran for their deep-dive into hot water. In this episode, Neil Donnelly and Charlie Simek, Energy Engineers at New Ecology specializing in data-focused decarbonization planning and building system optimization, follow up on their recent NESEA BuildingEnergy Boston presentation, “Equitable, Data Driven, Domestic Hot Water Decarbonization” to show how real data from real buildings can guide more efficient and lower-cost systems when its time to replace them. We explore the opportunities within recently monitored domestic hot water systems and the steps for owners, operators, engineers and utility program administrators.
