NESEA's BuildingEnergy NYC conference and trade show is a chance to immerse yourself in a full day of networking and intensive learning with your peers from the fields of design, construction, engineering, policy, finance, and beyond.

The theme of this year's conference is Deconstruction Decarbonization: our peer-reviewed sessions will break down the decarbonization process from beginning to end, including policy, design, financing, inclusive workforce development, construction, and paths to reaching deeper change at scale.

This unique event is designed by and for our community of practitioners, ensuring that the content is useful, relevant, and on the leading edge. Conference sessions present best practices and lessons learned based on real case studies and proven data, as well as showcasing innovative technologies and programs. Join us in kicking off BuildingEnergy NYC 2023! We'll gather to honor the 2023 NESEA award recipients and to celebrate our growing NYC community. 

During this annual event, we present three awards (more information below), and attendees have the opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with old friends. We are pleased to announce that this year, following our awards presentation and networking time, NESEA Night will feature the premier screening of “A More Equitable Revolution,” a 30-minute episode of a new docuseries from NYSERDA exploring the energy revolution in New York State. 

The event is open to the public and registration is required.

Each year, the NESEA community comes together to honor the contributions of three outstanding individuals in the community. After an open call for nominations, committees of NESEA Members vote to recognize the contributions and service of the new recipients. NESEA’s awards represent the richness of talent in our community, honor our history, and celebrate our future.

Join NESEA as we tour the award-winning Saugus Middle High School Complex, the first state-funded school to earn LEED Platinum certification. This recently-completed 271,000 square foot facility was built to serve over 1,300 students and the community for years to come. The project reduces the site’s carbon emissions and water use and links the town’s past heritage and future needs.

During this tour, attendees will learn about how the project team, led by our hosts HMFH Architects, aimed to meet the school’s many sustainability and educational goals through a holistic approach to the design.

NESEA envisions a "vibrant and resilient built environment that supports climate justice and equity."  As a reflection of that vision, the theme of the next issue of BuildingEnergy magazine will be Climate Resiliency. Proposals for inclusion are due Friday, August 25.

As temperatures rise globally and extreme weather becomes commonplace, it is essential for our community to share our experience, insights, and strategies for coping with these changes. All proposals will be considered, but those connecting to the general theme of climate resiliency will be prioritized.

Adrienne joined the firm in 2012 as Office Manager and was
promoted to the Director of Operations and Marketing in 2015. She joins

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced $10 million in funding is now available under Round Four of the $58 million Buildings of Excellence Competition, which aims to advance zero-carbon multifamily buildings in New York. This round provides financial awards and recognition for the design and construction of resilient, climate- friendly buildings that are healthier for residents.

The Buildings of Excellence Competition is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Proposals are being accepted for early-stage design projects from developers and their design teams that integrate carbon neutral features into pre-schematic and schematic design phases, and lead to the cost-effective construction and completion of exemplary multi-family buildings

Proposals to the Competition's solicitation for demonstration projects will be accepted through Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 3:00 PM. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has partnered with Built Environment Plus (BE+) to run this exciting new challenge to influence design decisions to address the embodied carbon of projects. Along with cash prizes for projects demonstrating significant embodied carbon reductions, the Challenge is providing resources, tools, and trainings to support project teams in performing Whole Building Life Cycle Assessments (WBLCAs). Free licenses to either One Click LCA or Tally LCA are being provided to every firm that simply expresses interest in the Challenge.

The deadline for submitting projects is March 31, 2024. A total of $380,000 in prizes are available. Five prizes are reserved for first-time use of WBLCAs. Projects must be whole buildings over 20,000 square feet. Prizes include a $50,000 grand prize for substantial rehabilitation, a $50,000 grand prize for new construction, nine runner-up prizes of $30,000, and a $10,000 people’s choice award. Learn more...
