The Center for EcoTechnology is looking for a HERS Rater with experience performing HERS ratings on single family and multifamily buildings. The HERS Rater will perform energy modeling, inspect buildings at all stages of construction or renovation, and perform diagnostic testing (including blower door testing, duct leakage testing, and ventilation testing), providing consulting on high performance construction throughout. The HERS Rater will communicate with and educate building owners, developers, architects, engineers, and contractors in order to help projects meet their energy efficiency goals. The HERS Rater will manage a number of projects throughout Massachusetts.

Job Responsibilities:
- Energy Modeling: Performs preliminary HERS ratings from plans for single family and multifamily buildings prior to permitting. Assists project team with finding the most cost effective way to achieve their energy efficiency goals and requirements. Updates energy models as building is constructed or renovated and provides final HERS certificates at project completion.
- Inspections: Schedules and performs on-site inspections of single family and multifamily buildings under construction or renovation, assessing energy efficiency features including insulation, windows, air sealing, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, lighting, and appliances. Communicates with project representative during inspection and documents findings in a report.
- Consulting: Provides building science-based recommendations to clients for saving energy, improving comfort and healthfulness, and reducing environmental impact, which may include new construction or retrofit projects that will not be receiving HERS ratings.
- Diagnostic Testing: Performs blower door tests, duct leakage tests, and ventilation tests in single family and multifamily buildings at different stages of construction or renovation. Coordinates with other staff to complete testing of large projects.
- Project Management: Stays up to date on the progress of all projects, managing numerous projects simultaneously. Ensures projects stay on track to achieve energy efficiency goals and program requirements. Enters data into appropriate databases.
- Sales and Relationship Development: Maintains ongoing relationships with customers for future opportunities. Pursues opportunities for working with customer on other projects.
Job Location
The candidate will work from home office and perform field work 60% of the time. Job sites will be throughout Massachusetts .

What You Offer
Minimum 1-3 years experience working as a HERS rater of single family and multifamily buildings. Must have strong math and geometry skills, excellent computer skills including Excel and databases, and excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong communication skills including the ability to communicate building science information for practical application are key. Must have a strong commitment to improving the sustainability of residential buildings.
The preferred candidate will have one or more of the following certifications:
- Engineering degree preferred.
- ENERGY STAR Homes or Multifamily New Construction
- Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst or Multifamily Building Analyst
- PHIUS
You must be able to move throughout a construction environment including outdoors, in basements and crawl spaces, and in unfinished or unfloored attics. Must be able to tolerate temperature extremes and poor air quality. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders and use technical and scientific equipment. Frequent computer use required.
