This six-week intensive program will provide practical, hands-on experience in the design/build process centered on high performance, super insulated residential homes. At the end of the program, students will feel comfortable with basic hand and power tools, framing, building envelope detailing - both design and build -, insulation types and methods, drawing and reading plans, understanding basic HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems and more.

This course will touch on three broad topic areas - net zero home design, high performance building construction and HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. This program is designed to help students experience a variety of aspects of the design/build process. However, this is just the beginning of what could be a lifelong exploration of design/build.

The construction portion of this program will be driven by the hands-on construction of a small structure (such as a cabin) that relates to a larger scale residential project. The design portion will be largely driven by students' personal projects. The systems portion will take place in the classroom using a demonstration wall and lectures.
