The Mayor's Office of Housing (MOH) is responsible for: housing the homeless, developing affordable housing, and managing the City’s real estate. We also work to ensure that renters and homeowners can find, maintain, and stay in their homes. The department develops and implements the City's housing creation and homelessness prevention plans. The department also collaborates with local and national partners to find new solutions and build more affordable housing for all, particularly those with lower income.

The Environmental and Transportation Planning Division is responsible for improving the city's quality of life, by working to protect and improve the city's environment and natural resources and by planning improvements to the city's transportation system that encourage sustainable modes of travel, enhancing energy efficiency in public and private buildings, promoting sustainable energy sources and participating in similar regional efforts.

The mission of the Department of Sustainability, also known as SustainPVD, is to create an equitable, low-carbon, and climate resilient future for Providence. With leadership from the Racial and Environmental Justice Committee, the city has prioritized centering racial equity in this work, demonstrated by the launch of the Equity in Sustainability Initiative in 2016 and the release of the Climate Justice Plan in 2019. The city’s first comprehensive sustainability action plan, Sustainable Providence, was released in 2014. The Office is advised by a community-led group, the Sustainability Commission, which holds monthly public meetings.

The department is responsible for supervising sustainability, energy, and resilience initiatives across the municipal government and the Salem community. This includes direct management of programs and projects, as well as collaboration with other departments and local organizations by engaging and supporting Salem residents, businesses, and non-profits to participate in activities that further the goals of Resilient Together and other community goals; aligning with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Our building performance consulting and certification teams provide consultation and project management to advance high-performance buildings. We help owners and developers maximize performance and energy savings for commercial and residential buildings.

At COA, you hold in your own hands the freedom and responsibility of building your educational path. Each student designs their course of study in human ecology—exploring the relationships between humans and their natural, cultural, and built environments. Even though we all have the same major, no two students have ever taken the same set of classes. And you don’t have to choose just one area of study; in fact, we hope you’ll pull together different disciplines and get excited about the surprising connections between them.
