Julie Newman, PhDDirector of Sustainability

Dr. Julie Newman is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability and the founding Director of Sustainability at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a role she has held since 2013. At MIT, she led the creation and launch of the Institute’s Office of Sustainability and serves as a lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. Prior to MIT, Dr. Newman founded Yale University’s Office of Sustainability in 2004, where she also held a lecturer appointment with the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Earlier in her career, she helped establish the University of New Hampshire’s Sustainability Institute, further shaping the field through institution-building and leadership.
