In 2013, Real Pickles became the first sole proprietorship in the country to transition to a worker-owned cooperative through a community investment campaign. In this campaign, they offered shares with lower-than-market rate financial returns, in exchange for triple bottom line returns. It was a bold move into uncharted territory, but they sold out in three weeks—it turned out that investors were hungry for the opportunity to make a triple bottom line investment.
