Seeking a Senior Design Professional to join our design-build remodeling team.

Are you passionate about good design? Creating functional, thoughtful, beautiful spaces? Do you enjoy helping people find products and select finishes that fit their budget and style? Do you want to work collaboratively with a team devoted to its mission and values around sustainability and people?

steveworks may just be the best company you haven’t yet worked at.

We’re looking for an experienced residential remodeling designer who enjoys the full process—from understanding a client’s vision and developing thoughtful designs, to selecting materials and products, documenting the work, and seeing the design come to life during construction.

This role requires someone who can balance design, technical knowledge, organization, client relationships, and collaboration while managing multiple projects at different stages of design and construction.

Flexible work schedule: 30-40hr/week

Full-time compensation: $90–120K
Benefits: Generous PTO, 401K plan, health benefits, and more.

What You’ll Do

Design

  • Develop thoughtful, functional, and beautiful designs for residential remodeling projects.
  • Work directly with clients to understand their needs, capture their vision, and help them discover what they want when they aren’t quite sure yet.
  • Bring creativity, vision, and joy to the design process while keeping projects grounded in budget and constructability.
  • Manage projects both independently and collaboratively, working within and improving our design process.
  • Work across a range of project types, including:
    • Kitchens and bathrooms
    • Small additions
    • Partial and whole-home renovations
    • Decks and porches
    • Windows and doors
    • Building envelope improvements
  • Develop and maintain drawings, details, specifications, and project scope throughout design.
  • Collaborate with pre-construction and production teams to ensure designs are coordinated, practical, and ready to build.

Building Performance & Sustainability

  • Incorporate high-performance building details and building-science principles into design.
  • Consider the environmental impacts of materials and products when making recommendations.
  • Help clients understand opportunities to reduce waste, lower the carbon footprint of their projects, and improve comfort and performance, with support from the broader steveworks team.

Product & Finish Selections

  • Guide clients through selections of finishes, fixtures, appliances, materials, and other products that fit their style, needs, budget, and values.
  • Research and recommend products with consideration for durability, sustainability, performance, and aesthetics.
  • Document selections and coordinate them with drawings and specifications.
  • Manage purchasing and order tracking.

Construction Administration

  • Stay involved through construction to help ensure the built work reflects the design and the client’s goals.
  • Conduct site visits at key stages of production.
  • Update drawings and documentation as projects evolve.
  • Coordinate with project managers, carpenters, subcontractors, vendors, and other members of the steveworks team.
  • Represent the client’s design priorities during construction and help resolve questions and issues as they arise.
  • Clearly communicate design intent to the people building the project.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional experience in residential remodeling, with a strong background in kitchen and bath design.
  • Strong design sensibility and the ability to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
  • Experience with high-performance building details and/or a strong interest in building science.
  • Ability to accurately document and modify exterior design details, including building envelope components and trim.
  • Familiarity with universal design and other approaches to improving accessibility.
  • Understanding of the environmental impacts of materials and product selection.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects concurrently and at different stages.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working directly with homeowners.
  • Ability to listen carefully, ask good questions, and translate clients’ ideas and priorities into cohesive designs.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency with the software and tools necessary for residential design and documentation.

Why steveworks?

steveworks is a worker-owned, triple-bottom-line-focused, design-build remodeling company committed to People, Planet, and Prosperity. Our projects exemplify craftsmanship, integrity, sustainability, and taking care of people.

We believe great projects come from bringing designers, builders, and clients together early and keeping them connected throughout the process. Our work is about more than making houses look good. We want to create homes that are comfortable, durable, beautiful, efficient, and thoughtfully designed, while continually finding ways to reduce the environmental impact of remodeling.

We’re looking for someone who would like to be part of that process. Someone who gets excited about a great design idea, enjoys finding the perfect tile or window, cares about how a wall is detailed, likes speaking with clients, and wants to see the thing they designed actually get built.

Women and people who identify as LGBTQ+ are encouraged to apply.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
