The Building in Context: Earth, Air, Water, Fire & Light
Conference Dates: March 10–11, 2027
It’s more important now than ever to focus on how our building-centric work impacts the systems and environments surrounding it. While decarbonization, electrification, and technology are necessary tools, they are not ends in themselves. Buildings exist in a complex human and environmental context and understanding that context is key to our success. To inspire and accelerate this understanding, the theme for BuildingEnergy Boston 2027 is Earth, Air, Water, Fire & Light.
The climate is changing, and we’ve passed the point where major impacts can be avoided. The frequency of severe weather events is increasing, with historically seasonal wildfires and flooding now occurring year round. How can we ensure management of air quality and resilience to fire and water damage in this new normal? Agricultural zones and plant and animal habitats are also shifting, and management of water resources is becoming more critical with increased droughts. Moreover, since buildings don’t live forever, how can we think from the outset about what happens when the building dies or is repurposed? Our work needs to address these concepts to be effective and relevant.
Through this elemental lens we can learn from each other and from different building and project types at different scales, how to analyze, understand, and improve many facets of a building project. These include life-cycle and community impacts, water resource management, air quality protection, habitat development and preservation, and climate resilience. Policy changes, collaborations and synergies, cultivation of a stable and capable workforce, and rigorous analysis of post-occupancy data and experience are all critical to getting this right.
Bring your projects, your data, and your hard-won lessons to Boston, and let's explore how to prepare our buildings for our evolving planet!
