Onward to 2050! Two Existing Commercial Building Decarbonization Case Studies

This session will share the results and lessons learned from two existing building decarbonization assessments: a large lab/office facility and a high school. Drawing on the Mass CEC Building Electrification & Transformation Accelerator (BETA) program, which informs statewide decarbonization planning and analysis protocols, the session offers a look into an in-depth 25-year decarbonization life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). We will explore the most cost-effective electrification of heating systems and GHG emissions reduction, supported with energy efficiency, advanced load reduction, electrification enabling measures, and solar PV and battery storage systems, as well as an upfront capital planning cost data up to 2050.

Learning Objectives

Describe the statewide comprehensive protocol approach to decarbonization planning and analysis of existing buildings, including facility assessment, technical energy and carbon analysis, Life Cycle Costs Analysis and capital planning.

Recognize the need for a customized approach in addressing the electrification of the variable mechanical systems by 2050 serving multiple building types and vintage, in lieu of a “one-size-fits-all” or one-type heat pump strategy.

Pursue steps to recognize and verify the challenges of potential decarbonization strategies on existing buildings, as well as impact or needs around imposing renovations, to best mitigate unexpected costs.

Evaluate decarbonization pathways combined with owner capital planning timelines up to 2050, in alignment with end of service equipment (or close to), while optimizing all available utility incentives, revenues and state programs.
