New Ecology, Inc. is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Engineering in its Boston office. The Director manages New Ecology’s engineering services and provides supervision, mentorship, and development of the engineering department and serves as a member of New Ecology’s management team.  In addition to management duties, the Director also provides technical support to New Ecology’s green building projects.  This technical support includes the peer review of MEP system design for improved performance and efficiency, field and data evaluation of existing MEP system performance in residential multifamily buildings, and creating conceptual designs for efficiency upgrades. We are seeking an experienced engineer with a mechanical engineering degree, a Professional Engineer license, substantial experience with HVAC systems, and a demonstrated knowledge of the principles of green building and energy efficiency.

New Ecology is an innovative, nationally-recognized, non-profit corporation. Our core work is providing energy efficiency and green building services that cost-effectively improve the performance, health and durability of buildings. Our clients are typically owners of multifamily housing, (with an emphasis on affordable housing) and community-based projects such as municipal, educational and arts buildings.  Projects include buildings that are being newly constructed, renovated, or are just seeking improved performance; see www.newecology.org. Duties and Responsibilities:

The technical and project responsibilities of the Director of Engineering will revolve around providing technical support to NEI project teams and directly to clients.  Specific tasks may include:

  • Peer review of HVAC plans and specifications prepared by others to maximize efficiency and ensure compliance with best practices, project design goals and green building standards;
  • Preparing Owners Project Requirements for use by owners’ consulting engineers and other team members;
  • Working with building owners to improve the energy performance of their buildings, including conducting building and HVAC system assessments, developing recommendations for upgrades to energy efficiency and building systems, analyzing energy consumption, estimating costs and conducting cost-benefit analysis of upgrades and preparing audit reports;
  • Preparing conceptual designs and specifications and bid packages;
  • Conducting forensic studies and quality control inspections of completed projects; and
  • Assisting with the development of remote monitoring systems and interpreting data generated by these systems and other building energy management systems.

 

Supervisory and management responsibilities include:

  • Supervising two mechanical engineer EITs and an energy modeler;
  • Developing standard operating procedures and calculations for energy audits and project design review;
  • Assisting with the preparation of annual budgets related to the engineering department and managing the department to those budgets;
  • Marketing and business development; and
  • Assisting in developing new lines of work.

 

New Ecology typically seeks to hire multidisciplinary, lifelong learners who naturally seek deeper and deeper understanding of how buildings operate, how finances, markets and regulations affect building ownership, and how this understanding can be used to convince owners and operators to adapt greener practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • A Professional Engineering license;
  • At least ten years of experience in evaluation of building mechanical systems and other building systems, HVAC design, and energy efficiency consulting work;
  • Demonstrated supervisory and management experience;
  • Strong writing skills and experience writing reports for clients; and
  • A valid driver’s license.

 

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • An advanced degree;
  • Specific experience as an energy manager;
  • Professional designations related to efficiency and green building;
  • A demonstrated ability to be responsible for projects and deliverables;
  • Experience commissioning and doing forensic diagnosis of HVAC equipment;
  • Knowledge of utility rebate programs;
  • Experience using energy modeling software;
  • Experience auditing multifamily and government buildings;
  • Physical abilities to inspect all aspects of buildings including accessing basements and roofs, working outside, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to handle and carry equipment;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and building and engineering design programs;
  • Specific management experience in a growing department.

 

Schedule:

Full time, exempt. Regular travel to job sites and meetings throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and periodic out of state travel is expected.
