Project Description:
This house was built in 2004. It ia a production builders 1,883 sq./ft. rasnch, slab on grade 9' ceilings, 2 x 4 exterior walls, stucco exterior finish with concrete tile roof. The test in Blower door was 1,875 CFM50. The test in Duct test was 80 CFM25. The house was heated by an 80,000 btu input 80% furnace and cooled by a 2 1/2 ton 14 SEER R-22 AC. There were 10 supply registers and 2 return registers.
The energy retrofit was performed by Tom Danielsen, Danielsen Construction and Energy Management. The HVAC system was removed including the duct system. The floor of the attic was airsealed. Final Blower door testing was 1,032 CFM50, a 40% reduction in infiltration. A new 2 ton, 2 stage 16 SEER R-410A Heat Pump was installed. There is no back-up heat with this system. Three supply registers were removed and 4 registers were relocated. The new ducts are R-8 deep burried under 18' of celulose insulation - R-60. The duct leakage is 20 CFM25, less than 2% on cooling. The External Static pressure is 0.23 IWC. The fan flow is 740 CFM for both heating and cooloing, 528 CFM per Ton on cooling. The 2nd stage of the AC is disabled which has the building cooling with 1.4 tons of AC, one ton for every 1,345 sq./ft.. Most of the lighting is LED. Other lighting are CFL, T8 and T5 florescent.
Results of energy savings from the first year of occupency (2008-2009) to the last year before the 2.65 kWh (10 panels) PV system was installed is 56.25%. Indoor air qualithy results in dusting once every 4 month vs once every month before retrofit. We no longer need to dust the blades of the 4 ceiling fans. We change the 20 x 30 x 2 and the 10 x 14 x 1 filters every 6 months. The filters removed look very similar to the new ones installed. The CO2 measurements with the 60 CFM HRV turned off is close to 800 PPM, and with the HRV running close to 400 PPM.
We will be close to ZNE on electric. First anniversary date is 10/15/16. Range/oven and Water heating is by natural gas.
