Join us for a Pro Tour of a recently renovated historic building in New Haven, CT! During this event, attendees will learn how the project team transformed this building, originally a hotel from 1816, into a Passive House-certified commercial space while preserving its historic facade and place in the community.

Our tour will begin with an opening presentation from the hosting team at Patriquin Architects, which will give attendees background on the historic significance of the building, the process of renovating it, and the efforts put into reaching the Passive House standard. After the opening presentation, we'll split into groups to hear from the professionals behind the project, who will share their specific work. After the tour, we'll host a reception and Q&A with the team.

Key components of the design include a highly-insulated and airtight envelope, the use of triple-pane high-performance windows on the interior of the existing historic windows, new electric ERV heat pump systems for ventilation, heating, and cooling, and a solar array on the roof.

King’s Block was officially PHIUS Certified in March 2023, and the project was recognized with a 2023 AIA CT Sustainable Architecture Award of Excellence.

Additional Details:

  • Project is three floors, with 4,040 sq feet of conditioned space
  • 96% of energy generated on site via 11.4 kW rooftop PV Array on south-southeastern roof gable
  • Originally built in 1816, renovation begun in 2020
  • Thermal & air/vapor barrier between basement and first floor, essentially disconnecting the basement (which is in a flood zone) outside of the conditioned space
