New Ecology, Inc. is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Decarbonization. Reporting directly to New Ecology’s Principal Director, Building Decarbonization, this newly created position will play a role in managing and developing our growing Decarbonization Division. The Decarbonization Team (‘Team’) works with building owners, developers, and community-based organizations to reduce carbon emissions from existing buildings while improving building performance, operation, resiliency, and resident health and comfort. The position is based in New Ecology’s Boston headquarters but may occasionally work out of the organization’s regional offices, currently in Wilmington, DE or Baltimore, MD.
The Director of Decarbonization will have a unique blend of technical, managerial, and field-building skills, including a demonstrated ability to lead a team of professionals, work collaboratively, develop partnerships, think strategically and have knowledge/expertise in business development and management. This role requires knowledge of how buildings work, decarbonization and electrification strategies and an understanding of the federal, state and local actors and policies that are encouraging building decarbonization. Knowledge of affordable multifamily housing development and operation is strongly preferred. Other areas of experience or expertise that are of interest include development of lasting, impactful community partnerships, capacity building of community and industry stakeholders, workforce development, and statistical analysis.

Our core work is providing energy efficiency, decarbonization, and green building services that cost-effectively improve the performance, health and durability of buildings. Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Management and Development (25%)
In coordination with the Principal Director:
• Develop and implement the strategic direction for the Team;
• Work to keep the program on sound financial footing by seeking new project opportunities and closely managing ongoing projects;
• Develop the annual budget for the Decarbonization lines of business, including the development of revenue projections for contracted and anticipated work;
• Help define the recruitment needs of the Team and coordinate with Human Resources to recruit, hire, and train a skilled, capable, and diverse staff;
• Keep abreast of policy developments to support continuous enhancement of program and service delivery;
• Draft proposals for new work.
Project and Program Management (25%)
• Manage multiple, concurrent and overlapping, decarbonization projects and programs to maintain budget and schedule and to course correct when needed;
• Track and evaluate the budgetary performance of projects and programs on a monthly basis in order to improve efficiency of project work;
• Perform quality control of client deliverables;
• Coordinate resource assignments with other Directors;
• Implement agreed upon process improvements.
Internal Management (30-35%)
• Perform routine supervisory tasks for 2-4 direct reports,, (e.g., weekly meetings, oversight of timesheet and expense report approval);
• Manage and support professional development for direct reports and overall team capacity to meet needs identified in the field;
• Support Principal Director in overall divisional management, including tracking impact metrics and progress against strategic plan, leading divisional meetings, and representing the division during internal meetings focused on resource allocation and staffing.
External Engagement and Development (15-20%)
• Partnerships—Manage and develop relationships with program partners and stakeholders, including funders; community-based organizations; affordable housing owners/developers; non-profit building owners, and local and state regulatory and housing entities;
• Policy—Engage with and provide technical support to local, state, and national organizations and entities that develop policies and programs related to sustainable and efficient affordable housing and non-profit facilities;
• Fundraising—Identify grant / program opportunities and assist in preparing proposals and conducting related activities to secure on-going funding to advance NEI’s mission and impact in across the regions we serve.
Qualifications:
New Ecology typically seeks to hire multidisciplinary, lifelong learners who naturally seek ever-deeper understanding of building and community sustainability and a desire to share and grow adoption of best practices to support New Ecology’s purpose and goals. A Director of Decarbonization in a nonprofit focused on affordable multifamily housing should possess a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of sustainability, affordable housing, and business development. Here's a detailed outline of qualifications:
Educational Background
• Required: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Science, Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, or Public Policy).
• Preferred: Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in fields like Sustainability Management, Energy Systems, Real Estate Development, or Business Administration.
Preferred Experience
• Decarbonization Expertise: At least 5-7 years of experience in energy efficiency, renewable energy, building decarbonization, or climate resilience in the context of residential or multifamily housing.
• Affordable Housing: Knowledge of affordable housing policy, financing mechanisms (e.g., LIHTC, HUD programs, Energy Efficiency programs), and the unique challenges of decarbonizing this sector.
• Project and Program Development: Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and manage sustainability or energy projects or programs, including securing funding and managing budgets.
• Business Development: Experience in building and managing a business unit, including developing a strategic plan, setting KPIs, managing staff, and achieving organizational goals.
Preferred Technical Skills
• Building Knowledge: Understanding of building science, durability and resiliency. Familiarity with commercial scale HVAC systems, building envelope technologies, renewable energy systems (e.g., solar), and energy storage solutions.
• Human Impact Knowledge: Understanding the ways in which buildings can affect resident health and safety, how these factors are identified and addressed.
• Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of building codes, energy standards (e.g., ASHRAE, BEPS, Passive House), and climate policies relevant to decarbonization.
• Software: Familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly complex use of Excel.
Leadership and Management Skills
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., government agencies, non-profit organizations, private developers, community organizations, funders), and mentor junior staff.
• Strong project management skills.
• Excellent communication skills for effectively engaging with diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders and community members. Strong writing skills.
Soft Skills
• Passion for sustainability and affordable housing.
• Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Cultural competence and experience working with diverse stakeholders, including underserved or low-income communities.
Certifications (Optional but Beneficial)
• CEM, BPI Multifamily, CMPV, PE
• Project Management Professional (PMP).
• A valid driver’s license
Key Responsibilities Alignment
Given the need to help build and manage a business unit, the ideal candidate should demonstrate entrepreneurial skills, the ability to establish partnerships, and experience in managing budgets and a team to achieve growth and impact goals. A track record of business development and securing grants from various sources, including philanthropy, is a plus.
Schedule:
Full time, exempt. Regular travel to office and meetings. Occasional overnight travel to our other offices or job sites.
Salary: $115-125k per year
