Job Overview
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) seeks an Analyst to support the Investments team in sourcing, evaluating, executing and managing venture investments in the most promising clean energy and climate technology companies in Massachusetts. This is an opportunity for a motivated candidate to take on significant responsibilities within a growing organization, develop skills in venture capital, and build a strong network of relationships across the climate-tech and investing sectors.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interests in this field, a desire to contribute to MassCEC’s mission as a public strategic investor, and the willingness and ability to take on and manage a wide range of tasks independently. The Analyst will report to the Investment Principal, and will work closely with other Investment Team members, as well as collaborating regularly with staff across the wider MassCEC organization.
Job Duties:
The Analyst will gain valuable experience supporting a broad range of investment activities:
- New Investments and Transaction Support: Help our team identify promising clean energy companies and make new investments to grow our portfolio.
- Help identify, track, analyze, and evaluate new clean energy investment opportunities.
- Conduct market research and investment due diligence including business plan evaluation and general, financial, and technical due diligence
- Assist in preparing proposals for MassCEC management, Investments Committee and Board of Directors.
- Assist with preparing transaction documents and closing investments.
Investments Portfolio Management and Support: Work with other members of the Investments team as we engage with and provide support to companies that we’ve already invested in.
- Assist senior staff with advising and managing investments in portfolio companies.
- Maintain and update data on portfolio company financial and environmental performance, among other metrics.
- Conduct research as needed to understand trends in markets, technologies, regulations and other factors that may affect portfolio companies.
External Representation and Engagement: Build a strong network of energy and climate ventures, investors, and other partners of MassCEC.
- Represent MassCEC at meetings, conferences and other events.
- Coordinate and conduct regular engagement with partner organizations.
- Attend events in order to identify new opportunities for investment or partnership.
Administrative Support: Help the Investments group to operate efficiently and in coordination with the rest of MassCEC.
- Assist with administrative duties such as taking notes, preparing agendas, preparing documents, information requests, and scheduling meetings.
- Manage investment and payment approvals in MassCEC’s award management software.
- Provide guidance and training to MassCEC interns or co-op students as needed and directed by senior staff.
Position Qualifications:
Basic requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree with excellent academic results in a relevant subject.
- 0-2 years of work experience post-graduation.
- At least some internship, co-op, or other experience in relevant fields such as energy and climate, market research, finance, or investments.
- Excellent quantitative, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Aptitude for working independently while juggling priorities and deadlines.
- Experience drawing conclusions and making recommendations from independent research.
- A good understanding of basic business, accounting and financial concepts.
- An interest in and some familiarity with clean energy and climate technology.
- Good skills with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Outstanding candidates may also have:
- A Master’s degree in a relevant subject.
- Experience working in or with start-ups or venture capital firms.
- Deeper knowledge of new technologies, business models, market trends and other developments in energy and climate industries.
- Familiarity with Pitchbook and other investment data sources.
