Residential Decarbonization Consultant
Hybrid position ideally for people living in eastern Massachusetts
Want to join a company that does good for the world? Do you care about the work you do and its impact on the future of our planet? Do you want caring coworkers and a good work/life balance? Join the Abode Energy Management (Abode) team, where you won’t ever want to leave. We’re fun, kind, passionate, progressive, and innovative. We are a fast-growing energy efficiency program implementor in the northeast, with a huge focus on electrification and heat pump adoption.
Summary/Objective
Building from its core expertise of administering residential energy efficiency programs, Abode has a fast growing line of business running utility and government programs focused on helping homeowners develop and implement plans to electrify and decarbonize their homes. The Residential Decarbonization Consultant (“RDC”) will conduct on-site assessments, work with homeowners to develop multi-year decarbonization plans, prioritize projects and help them implement these plans. This is a terrific opportunity for someone with a strong background in building science and residential energy efficiency to play a foundational role in scaling programs that help realize the climate impacts of electrification.
Responsibilities
Reporting to a Program Manager and working closely with experienced members of Abode’s decarbonization team, this position will include some or all of the following responsibilities:
● Conduct decarbonization assessments of single and multiple family homes
The Residential Decarbonization Consultant will follow protocols developed by Abode to conduct comprehensive on-site assessments that combine the most important elements of traditional home energy audits with more holistic electrification and decarbonization opportunities meeting the homeowner’s goals. The RDC will produce a report summarizing these opportunities and a recommended action plan.
● Provide assistance to homeowners in implementing decarbonization solutions
The RDC will provide educational and technical assistance over time to homeowners to help them move forward with near term solutions identified in the action plan. Such assistance may include additional evaluation (such as Manual J’s), providing advice around finding and coordinating contractors, and help with accessing available utility and government financial incentives.
● Help develop and improve utility scale decarbonization programs
The RDC will typically be conducting assessments and providing implementation assistance as part of programs Abode is running on behalf of utility and government clients. The RDC will need to balance providing sound, effective advice to homeowners with the need to work efficiently and within budgeted hours, and to work within the boundaries of program rules or processes. As part of these programs, the RDC may be asked to work closely with contractors, provide training or outreach to partners and stakeholders, and help applying day to day learnings to improve the processes and tools used to achieve these programs’ desired impacts.
● Other tasks as assigned by your Manager
Abode is in the midst of growing multi-faceted programs for state agencies and utilities utilizing a comprehensive blend of education, technical assistance, and financial incentives to accelerate the adoption of electrification and decarbonization solutions. The RDC position is likely to evolve over time to encompass new or changing responsibilities as these programs mature.
Qualifications
Strong candidates for this position will bring most, if not all, of the following skills and experience:
● Strong technical expertise in residential building science and energy efficiency, as evidenced by:
o a degree in building science, mechanical engineering, sustainability or other related fields, and/or
o industry certifications such as HERS, PHIUS BPI, LEED, or other related credentials
● Previous experience in and knowledge of building science obtained through work in utility energy efficiency programs, home improvement contracting, or other related businesses.

● Familiarity with navigating government or utility incentive programs.

● Calm, even temperament suited to meeting people with different needs and backgrounds where they are.
● Adaptable, flexible, collaborative team player that brings a positive can-do attitude.
● A self-starter, able to proactively manage competing demands and changing schedules to complete tasks in a timely and diligent manner.
