Indoor Air Quality in Affordable Housing: Issues, Occupant Perceptions and Solutions

Ventilation-system design and occupant behavior both significantly impact indoor air quality and consequently the health of occupants in affordable multi-family housing, that is increasingly being sited adjacent to highways and busy roadways in cities. We will present data from air quality measurements  conducted in over a dozen units, discuss indoor air quality and comfort survey results from ~40 units and lastly, engage the session’s participants in developing a content list for a guidance document aimed at design and implementation of best practices that will improve indoor air quality in affordable housing.

  • Describe how outdoor-generated pollution impacts indoor air quality (IAQ) as well as the health of residents in housing near busy roadways
  • Describe health benefits of installing and maintaining ventilation systems that improve indoor air quality
  • Explain the difference between the IAQ impacts of whole building ventilation strategies versus individual-level behavioral interventions
  • Engage in discussions to populate a content list for guidance aimed at improving IAQ for residential buildings
