Minto Killarney Net Zero

Project Description:

The Minto Killarney Net Zero Energy (NZE) home is located in Arcadia, a 200-acre community west of Ottawa. This exciting project is the result of a partnership with Natural Resources Canada's ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII) and Owens Corning.

The goal of the Kilarney NZE model home is to bring a net zero offering to the Ottawa market. With the Kilarney model, prospective home-buyers will be able to purchase a Net Zero Ready home (NZEr) within an affordable range. Projecting a 65 per cent reduction in total home energy consumption, the NZEr Killarney is positioned to further offset remaining energy use with the option to add solar panels post purchase.

The Killarney NZE features ___ Owens Corning's exterior CodeBoard Air Barrier System rigid insulation on exterior walls, triple windows, highly efficient cold climate heat pump and HRV as well as ___ photovoltaic panels on the home's south face. The Kilarney NZE is expected to

Site description:

The Killarney NZE home is located in Minto's Arcadia community, west of Ottawa. The homes built in Arcadia are pursuing LEED for Homes certification. The community is north of the Queensway, west of the Carp River, and east of Huntmar Drive with easy access to the 417. These homes are within walking distance to the Tanger Outlet mall and the Canadian Tire Center. The site is in close proximity to many natural features including bike trails, parks, etc. Upon completion of the project, the entire development will encompass 1700 units, including townhomes and single family homes.

Summary of enclosure strategy/description:

This project is the result of a partnership with Owens Corning and a pilot for the Codeboard Air Barrier Systems (CABS). The CABS is the primary air barrier placed on the exterior of the building envelope. It was used for the NZE home as it prevents thermal bridging from occurring and increases the effective R-value of the wall, increasing air tightness levels at framing and pre-delivery stages and eliminating the need for additional exterior weather barrier.
