Rick Ames is a principal of Next Phase Studios, Architects of Boston. Starting with site specific, humanistic design, the work focuses on environmental performance and appropriate building technology for a wide range of projects and building types.
There is a strong commitment that our buildings and design can now be restorative, and actually heal and improve our built and natural ecologies. Education and research are an active part of the practice. Rick provides services ranging from architectural design, consulting, design/build, prototyping, workshops, research and grant writing.
The firm has been recognized with national and international design and performance awards, numerous publications, and local housing and community service awards. These include a Full Living Building Challenge and multiple LEED-Platinum Certified projects for performance. They include multiple AIA awards, RIBA Gold Medal, and Harleston-Parker medal for Design excellence.
Rick has a BA from UVM in a self-designed major in Architectural & Engineering Studies and an M.Arch from MIT. Education and research are an active part of the practice with ongoing teaching commitments at MIT, the BAC, and the Yestermorrow School.
